Root Canal Treatment Cost in Chennai: Procedure, Types, Benefits & Aftercare

Root canal cost in Chennai from ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 by tooth type. Dr. M. Srikanth explains pricing, pain, visits and crowns. Same-day consultations in Chromepet

Reviewed by Dr. M. Srikanth, BDS, MDS (Prosthodontics), Smile Solutions Family Dentistry, Chromepet

Quick Answer

A root canal in Chennai usually costs between ₹4,000 and ₹12,000 per tooth. Front teeth sit at the lower end. Back teeth (molars) sit at the higher end, because they have more canals and take longer.

Here's what most people want to know first:

  • Cost: About ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 for a front tooth, and ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 for a molar
  • Visits: One to three, depending on infection and complexity
  • Time: Roughly 45 to 90 minutes per visit
  • Crown: Usually charged separately, and most back teeth need one
  • Pain: You'll be numb for the procedure. Some soreness afterwards is normal and settles in a few days

Root Canal Treatment Cost in Chennai

If you've been told you need a root canal, the first worry is usually the bill. Fair enough. Here's an honest breakdown of what Chennai patients typically pay.

RCT Cost by Tooth Type

Tooth

Typical canals

Approximate cost in Chennai

Front tooth (incisor, canine)

1

₹4,000 to ₹7,000

Premolar

1 to 2

₹5,000 to ₹9,000

Molar (back tooth)

3 to 4

₹6,000 to ₹12,000

Front teeth have one root and are easy to reach. Molars have several canals, they're curved, and they sit right at the back of your mouth. That extra work is why the price goes up.

Other Costs You May Need

The root canal itself is only one part of the bill. Depending on your tooth, you may also need:

Item

Approximate cost

Consultation

₹300

X-ray / RVG

₹200 to ₹500

3D CBCT scan (only when needed)

[Clinic to confirm]

Re-root canal (redoing an old RCT)

₹8,000 to ₹15,000

Post and core (to support the crown)

₹2,000 to ₹5,000

Dental crown

₹5,000 to ₹18,000

Extra treatment (infection control, medication)

As needed

Please ask about the crown cost on day one. Many people hear "₹6,000 for RCT" and later get surprised by the crown. We would rather tell you the full picture up front.

What Affects Root Canal Cost?

  • Number of canals. More canals mean more time and more cleaning.
  • Tooth location. Back teeth are harder to reach and treat.
  • Infection severity. A tooth with swelling or an abscess may need extra visits and medication.
  • Complexity. Very curved or narrow canals take longer.
  • Previous treatment. Redoing an old root canal costs more than a first-time one.
  • Technology and technique. Rotary instruments, digital X-rays and scans add accuracy.
  • Final restoration. A metal-ceramic crown costs less than zirconia.

Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?

Many people live with a toothache for weeks, hoping it will settle with a painkiller. Sometimes it does, for a while. These are the signs that usually mean the nerve inside the tooth is in trouble:

  • A toothache that keeps coming back or won't go away (pallu vali that doesn't stop)
  • Pain when you bite or chew
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the drink is gone
  • Pain at night that wakes you up
  • Swelling in the gum or face
  • A small pimple or boil on the gum, sometimes with pus or a bad taste
  • A deep cavity that's close to the nerve
  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A tooth that has turned dark or grey

An important point: these symptoms don't confirm a root canal on their own. Some of them can come from a cavity, a gum problem or a cracked filling. Only an examination and an X-ray can tell us what's really happening. That's why we start with a proper check, not a guess.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth there's a soft centre called the pulp. It holds nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach it, the pulp gets inflamed or infected. It can't heal on its own.

A root canal is how we deal with that. In simple terms:

  1. We remove the infected pulp
  2. We clean and disinfect the tiny canals inside the root
  3. We seal them so bacteria can't return
  4. We restore the tooth so you can chew on it again

You keep your own tooth, and the infection goes.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

This is the biggest fear, so let's answer it straight.

  • During treatment: We numb the area with local anaesthesia first. You may feel pressure or vibration, but you shouldn't feel sharp pain. If you do, tell us and we'll stop and top up the numbing.
  • After treatment: The area can feel sore or tender for a few days, especially when you bite. A simple painkiller prescribed by your dentist usually handles it.
  • The real pain is the infection. Most people tell us the toothache before the procedure was much worse than the treatment itself.

When to call us: Strong pain that keeps increasing, swelling in your face, fever, or pain that doesn't ease after a few days. Don't wait it out.

Worried? Talk it over before you decide. [Talk to a Dentist]

How Is Root Canal Treatment Done?

  1. Examination and X-ray: We check the tooth, take an X-ray (and a CBCT scan in tricky cases) and confirm the diagnosis.
  2. Local anaesthesia: The tooth and the area around it are numbed.
  3. Tooth access: A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the canals. A rubber sheet is used to keep the tooth clean and dry.
  4. Infected pulp removal: The damaged pulp is taken out.
  5. Cleaning and shaping: The canals are cleaned with fine instruments and disinfecting solution, then shaped so they can be sealed properly.
  6. Filling and sealing: The cleaned canals are filled and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling goes on top.
  7. Final restoration or crown: The tooth is rebuilt to full strength. For most back teeth, this means a crown.

Types of Root Canal Treatment

Different teeth need different approaches. The right type depends on your case, not on which sounds most advanced.

Conventional RCT

Done with hand files and standard techniques. Reliable and suitable for many straightforward cases.

Rotary Root Canal Treatment

Uses motor-driven nickel-titanium files. These shape the canals more smoothly and often save time, especially in molars.

Microscope-Assisted RCT

A magnifying microscope helps the dentist see fine canals clearly. It's most useful in complicated or re-treatment cases.

Laser-Assisted RCT

Laser can be used to help disinfect canals in some cases. It's an add-on in certain situations, not something every tooth needs.

Single-Sitting RCT

The whole treatment is finished in one visit. Works well when the tooth isn't badly infected and there's no swelling.

Re-Root Canal Treatment (Re-RCT)

When an earlier root canal has failed or the tooth gets infected again, the old filling is removed, the canals are cleaned again and resealed.

How Many Visits Are Required for Root Canal Treatment?

  • Single visit: Possible for many straightforward teeth, usually 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Two visits: Common for molars or teeth with infection. Medicine is placed inside the tooth between visits, and the canals are sealed in the second visit.
  • Complex cases: Swelling, curved canals or very deep infection can need three visits.
  • Re-RCT: Often takes more than one visit.

How long is one appointment? Roughly 45 minutes for a front tooth and up to 90 minutes for a molar.

What decides it: how infected the tooth is, how many canals it has, whether you have swelling, and how comfortable you are sitting for long periods. If you're travelling in from outside Chromepet or have a tight work schedule, tell us and we'll plan the visits around you.

Is a Crown Necessary After Root Canal Treatment?

Often yes, especially for back teeth. Here's why.

After a root canal, the tooth has usually lost a lot of its structure to decay and to the opening we made. It also becomes more brittle over time. A back tooth takes heavy chewing force every day, and without a crown it can crack or split. If it splits badly, the tooth may not be savable.

Whether you need one depends on:

  • Which tooth it is (back teeth almost always do, front teeth sometimes don't)
  • How much natural tooth is left
  • How strong the remaining tooth is
  • Your bite and chewing habits
  • What filling is already there

Root canal cost does not equal the full cost of fixing the tooth. Budget for the RCT and the crown together. A typical molar root canal with a crown comes to about ₹12,000 to ₹30,000, depending on the crown material.

This is where a prosthodontist helps. Dr. Srikanth specialises in crowns and tooth restoration, so the same dentist who plans your crown is looking at your tooth from the start.

Root Canal vs Tooth Extraction: Which Is Better?

Save your tooth with a root canal

  • You keep your natural tooth and your natural bite
  • The jawbone stays supported
  • No gap to fill later
  • Usually the cheaper choice over the long run

Remove the tooth

  • Lower cost on the day
  • But you'll probably need a bridge or implant later (₹15,000 to ₹65,000 depending on the option), or live with a gap
  • Neighbouring teeth can drift, and the bone can shrink

For most people, saving the tooth is the better path. When extraction makes sense: the tooth is cracked below the gum, the root is fractured, the bone around it is badly damaged, there's too little tooth left to rebuild, or a root canal has already failed more than once.

We'll tell you honestly which side your tooth falls on. If the tooth can't be saved, we'll say so and explain your replacement options. (We cover those in detail in our [Dental Bridge vs Implant guide].)

What Happens If Root Canal Treatment Is Delayed?

A painful tooth often settles down for a bit, and that's when many people stop worrying. But the infection is still there. Here's how it usually goes:

Decay or injury → Inflamed pulp → Infection → Abscess (a pocket of pus) → Possible bone damage → Possible loss of the tooth

Waiting also affects the bill. A tooth that could have had a simple root canal can end up needing re-treatment, a crown with extra support, or extraction and replacement. That's usually more costly than treating it early.

We're not saying this to scare you. Plenty of teeth are saved even when people come in late. But the sooner it's checked, the simpler and cheaper it tends to be.

Root Canal Treatment Aftercare

  • Eating: Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, or you may bite your cheek or tongue. Stick to soft food for the first day or two.
  • Chew on the other side until the tooth has its crown or final filling.
  • Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal.
  • Brushing and flossing: Carry on as usual. Be gentle around the treated tooth.
  • Temporary filling: If you have one, avoid very hard or sticky food (chewy sweets, hard nuts) as it can come off.
  • Get the crown on time. This is the step people skip most often, and it's the one that protects the tooth.
  • Follow-up: Come back for your review so we can check healing.
  • Call us if: Pain gets worse, swelling appears, you get a fever, or the filling falls out.

Why Choose Smile Solutions for Root Canal Treatment in Chennai?

We're a family dental clinic in Chromepet. Our patients are your neighbours, and many bring their parents and children along. Here is what we can show you, rather than just tell you.

Your dentist: Dr. M. Srikanth, BDS, MDS (Prosthodontics). A prosthodontist spends years training in how to rebuild and protect damaged teeth. That matters because a root canal only works long term if the tooth is restored properly afterwards.

What you get at our clinic:

  • Same-day consultations. If you walk in with a toothache, we'll see you and tell you what's going on.
  • In-house CBCT scan. For complicated teeth, a 3D scan shows the canals and bone clearly, without sending you to another centre.
  • Weekend hours. Sun – Sat 9:15 AM – 9:30 PM. Useful if you can't take leave from work.
  • Tamil and English-speaking team. Ask every question in the language you're comfortable with.
  • Clear estimates. You'll know the cost of the root canal and the crown before we begin.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

What is the cost of RCT in Chennai?

Usually ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 per tooth, depending on the tooth and how complex it is. Front teeth cost less and molars cost more.

How much does a molar root canal cost?

Roughly ₹6,000 to ₹12,000. Molars have more canals and take longer to treat.

Is the crown cost included in RCT?

Usually not. The crown is a separate step and a separate cost, so ask for both estimates together.

Is RCT painful?

The treatment is done under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn't feel sharp pain. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is normal.

How many sittings are required?

One to three, depending on infection, the number of canals and your case.

Can RCT be completed in one sitting?

Often yes, if the tooth isn't badly infected and there's no swelling. Your dentist will advise after the X-ray.

How long does RCT take?

About 45 to 90 minutes per visit.

Is a crown necessary after RCT?

For most back teeth, yes. Front teeth sometimes don't need one if enough natural tooth remains. We'll tell you after checking the tooth.

What is Re-RCT?

It's redoing a root canal that has failed or become infected again. The old filling is removed; the canals are cleaned and resealed. It usually costs more than a first-time root canal.

Is RCT better than extraction?

In most cases, yes, if the tooth can be saved. It keeps your natural tooth and avoids the cost of replacing it later. Some teeth can't be saved, and we'll say so honestly.

How long does an RCT-treated tooth last?

With a good seal, a proper crown and regular cleaning, many last for decades.

Can I eat after RCT?

Yes, once the numbness is gone. Stick to soft foods for a day or two and avoid chewing hard on the treated tooth until the crown is placed.

What happens if I delay RCT?

The infection can spread, causing swelling, an abscess and possible bone damage. The tooth may end up needing extraction, which usually costs more overall.

Need Root Canal Treatment in Chennai?

Tooth pain doesn't usually fix itself, and the longer it's left, the more it can cost you. You don't have to decide anything today. Come in, get the tooth examined, and hear exactly what it needs and what it will cost before we start.
